Worship

The light of nature shows that there is a God who has lordship and sovereignty over all and is therefore to be feared, loved, praised, called upon and trusted in, and served with all the heart, and with all the soul, and with all the might. Based on what God’s Word teaches us about this, religious worship is to be given to God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit; and to Him alone; not to angels, saints or any other creature: and since the fall, not without a Mediator; nor in the mediation of any other but of Christ alone. At Providence, we believe children, as members of the covenant of grace, are to be included, as far as possible, in the public worship of God.

Assemble the people, men, women, and little ones, and the sojourner within your towns, that they may hear and learn to fear the Lord your God, and be careful to do all the words of this law, and that their children, who have not known it, may hear and learn to fear the Lord your God, as long as you live in the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess.
— Deuteronomy 31:12-13

God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. — John 4:24

To God Alone Be The Glory

God has shown us in His Word how He is to be worshiped, therefore we are not free to invent ways to worship Him not commanded in Scripture. Our worship may be described then as Reformed according to Scripture. We believe worshiping God in this way brings glory to God through Jesus Christ and offers the greatest spiritual benefit to God’s people.

Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe. — Hebrews 12:28

Order of Worship

But all things should be done decently and in order. —1 Corinthians 14:40

Call to Worship

God having summoned his people to assemble in his presence to worship him on the Lord’s Day, there ought to be a call to the congregation, in God’s own words, to worship him.

Public Prayer

Invocation

This is a brief prayer of approach to God in response to his call to enter his presence for worship.

Prayer of Confession

It is fitting that a prayer of confession of sin precede or follow any reading of the law of God to the congregation.

Prayer of Intercession

It is fitting that the congregation intercede for the whole of mankind; for civil rulers; for the church universal; for Christian missions at home and abroad, Christian education, and other Christian activities, and for our whole church.

The Lord’s Prayer

The form of prayer that our Lord Jesus taught his disciples, commonly called “the Lord’s Prayer,” is particularly appropriate for use by the entire congregation to pray vocally in unison.

Congregational Singing

God’s people should sing, not merely with the lips, but with understanding and with grace in their hearts, making melody to the Lord.

Reading of Scripture

Because the hearing of God’s Word is a means of grace, the public reading of the Holy Scriptures is an essential element of public worship.

Preaching of the Word

The preaching of the Word, the power of God unto salvation, is indispensable in the public worship of God.

Sacraments

The sacraments, baptism and the Lord’s Supper, as visible signs and seals of the Word of the covenant, are important elements of public worship. They represent Christ and his benefits, and confirm his people’s participation in him.

Confession of Faith

It is fitting that the congregation as one body confess its common faith, using creeds that are true to the Word of God.

Benediction

The benediction is the pronouncement of God’s blessing upon his people at the conclusion of the worship service.
